Sky Blue has been looking for its first win of the season for weeks, and they saw several great chances of finding it against the Washington Spirit. With a breakaway run toward goal in the 45th minute, Shea Groom seemed in primed position to capitalize but couldn’t shake the defender on her heels to turn and shoot. Moments later, Tiernan took a shot feet away from goal, denied only by the keeper falling on it at the last minute.

The war waged on in the same way throughout the night. Sky Blue managed to get seven of its 20 shots on goal, nearly doubling the Spirit’s production on offense. Notably though, Sky Blue only maintained 44 percent of the possession but made every minute count as it took shot after shot after shot on the night, creating opportunities and taking shots until the final whistle. Sky Blue recorded five corners while the Spirit went 4 for 11 on goal and tallied five corners.

New Jersey moves to 0-2-8 and will continue to seek its first win on Saturday against Orlando at 4:30 p.m. while the Spirit moves to 2-3-7 on the season and returns to face off with Seattle on Saturday at 4 p.m.
