SANTA MONICA – Yesterday night, Australia defeated the USWNT, 1-0, in their first game in the Tournament of Nations at CenturyLink Field.  This is the first time in their last 27 match ups that Australia has won.  The USWNT, the favorites to win the tournament, are ranked number one in the world, while Australia is ranked 7th.

During the game, each team got their chances. Despite this, the United States was unable to get the ball into the net. Australia, on the other hand, had their moment in minute 67.  Tameka Butt recovered the ball right in front of the goal and slid it in past the goalie, putting Australia up 1-0.

Coach Jill Ellis then decided to start subbing in some of the more seasoned vets into the game in an effort to equalize the match. However, the USWNT was unable to do so and the game ended with Australia winning 1-0.

Last night, Japan also played Brazil at CenturyLink Field and tied them 1-1 in the Tournament of Nations. This puts the USWNT in last place in the tournament.

Next up, the USWNT will take on Brazil on Sunday at 5:00, while Japan will play Australia on Sunday at 2:15. The US game will air on ESPN2, and the Japan, Australia game will air on ESPN.

This is the first time in 27 matches that Australia has defeated the USWNT.
