SANTA MONICA – FC Kansas won their third game in a row on Sunday, defeating the Chicago Red Stars, 3-1. This match, however, marks the third straight loss for the Chicago Red Stars.

Right out of the gate, the Red Stars seemed set on turning their losing streak around. However, despite a promising opportunity in the first 20 minutes by Christen Press, it was FC Kansas who got the first goal in minute 23.

Shea Groom set Sydney Leroux up with the ball right in front of the net. Leroux took the opportunity to slide the ball into the far corner of the goal, giving FC Kansas City a 1-0 lead.

Then, in minute 29, Groom was back at it again. This time, she stole the ball from a defender and passed it back to Katie Bowen who easily kicked it into the back of the net.

Then, in minute 64, the Chicago Red Stars finally got on the board. It was then, that Julie Ertz charged down the field, passed the ball to Yuki Nagasato who then passed it back to Ertz. Ertz then kicked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the far back corner of the net. This goal put the Chicago Red Stars down by only one goal with 25 minutes to go.

However, it was FC Kansas who scored the next and final goal of the match. In minute 80, Megan Kelly received the ball and chipped it over the goalie’s head, giving Kansas a 3-1 lead and effectively winning the game.

Next, the Chicago Red Stars will take on Washington Spirit on Saturday at 4:00, while FC Kansas City will face Orlando Pride on Saturday at 12:30.

Although Shea Groom did not get a goal of her own, she helped lead Kansas City FC to victory by assisting the first two goals of the match.
