SANTA MONICA – Despite an early lead Washington Spirit fell, once again, to FC Kansas.  The two teams have faced each other two weeks in a row and just like Washington lost by 1 goal last week, they did so once again this weekend. Kansas defeated them 3-2 on Saturday.

The game started on a high note for Washington.  Just 5 minutes in Kristie Mewis scored, putting the Spirit up 1-0.  Just four minutes later, however, Sydney Leroux responded with a goal of her own, tying the game up.  Leroux wasn’t done just yet, and in minute 27 she was back at it, scoring again for Kansas City and putting them up, 2-1.

It took until minute 60 for the action to really start in the second half.  It was then that Becky Sauerbrunn made Kansas’ lead a little larger when she scored off of an assist from Ratcliffe.  However, just 10 minutes later, Alexa Newfield got her second yellow card of the game, forcing Kansas to play one woman short.  The Spirit finally got another goal in minute 83, however even down a player, Kansas was able to hold onto their lead and the final score was 3-2.

Next, the Spirit will play Houston Dash on Saturday at 4:00.  Despite North Carolina losing this week, they are still in first place in the NWSL and will take on Kansas City, Saturday at 12:30.
